Somatic Therapeutic Intervention

Somatic Therapy for Trauma

Somatic therapy is highly effective in treating trauma because it recognizes that painful experiences are not only stored in the mind but also within the body. Trauma often disrupts the nervous system, leading to chronic tension, dissociation, or hyper-alertness.

Through gentle awareness of bodily sensations, movement, breathwork, and mindfulness, somatic therapy helps clients safely release stored trauma. This approach allows healing to happen without the need to re-tell traumatic stories, which can sometimes feel re-traumatizing in traditional talk therapy.

By focusing on the present-moment experience in the body, clients restore a sense of safety, regulation, and control.

Over time, they gain:

  • Greater self-awareness
  • Emotional resilience
  • The ability to respond to stress in healthier ways

This makes somatic therapy a powerful modality for trauma recovery and long-term healing.

Somatic Therapy for Substance Use and Recovery:

Somatic therapy can be a transformative support in treating substance use and addictions, particularly because it addresses the underlying trauma, emotional dysregulation, and disconnection from the body that often fuel addictive behaviors.

Many people struggling with addiction have learned to disconnect from their physical and emotional pain as a means of survival. Somatic therapy gently guides clients back into their bodies, helping them safely access and release stored emotions and sensations.

By learning to notice and regulate bodily cues, such as anxiety, cravings, or stress, clients become better equipped to:

  • Interrupt automatic, compulsive behaviors
  • Make more conscious choices
  • Cultivate emotional stability and self-compassion

Somatic practices like grounding, mindful movement, and breathwork foster a stronger sense of agency and resilience. Integrated into addiction treatment, somatic therapy supports long-term recovery by healing the root causes of substance use and rebuilding trust in the body.

Somatic therapy honors the body as an essential partner in healing — whether from trauma, stress, or addiction. It creates a safe space to reconnect, regulate, and reclaim your life.
